Thank You and Goodbye!

Dear Readers,

Wow, what a year! Heartfelt congratulations to all of the learners in Readeville for creating and contributing to our learning community. It’s wonderful to think about the children who walked through the doors on day one of year two and how much progress they have made throughout 2017.

A massive thank you to all of the parents and grandparents from Room 22, Room 23 and Room 24 for your ongoing support.

Just a few housekeeping points:

* Here is a photo of a note that we sent home today about ’51 Things To Do Before You’re 12′. We hope these ideas inspire you if you are looking for things to do during the summer holidays:

* Today the children also took home an A3 plastic folder with some of their learning from this year.

* Don’t forget, school dismissal time tomorrow (Friday) is 2:10pm.

We have so enjoyed teaching the children in Readeville this year. We wish you a safe and happy festive season and look forward to seeing you around the school in years to come.

Kind regards,

Marie, Nancy, Michelle and Rachel

That’s Entertainment!

Dear Readers,

We really don’t have the words to express how impressed we were with our performers at the school concert last night. The children from Room 23 and Room 24 blew us away with their singing, dance moves and stellar stage presence. What a great showcase for risk-taking, communicating and the sheer joy that comes from nailing a performance you have spent so much time and effort preparing. Room 23 and Room 24, we salute you! Here are some photo highlights:

Class Party and the Movies:

Just a reminder that our class party and movie excursion to Paddington 2 are both being held this coming Monday (December 11).

Class Party: The children won’t need to bring lunch on Monday and we need only small plates of food. Please come along between 12:00 and 1pm to celebrate and help out if you are able.

Movies: Children can wear casual clothes (including PJs or tracksuits) to the movies. Please don’t send along any food, drinks, money, phones or electronic toys with your child (we will supply a fruit-box and small bag of chips). Children can bring a soft toy or comfort blanket if they would like to. The venue for the movie is Wallis Cinemas, Mitcham Square, 119 Belair Road, Torrens Park. Drop-off time is 5:45pm and pick-up time is 8pm. Children MUST be signed in and signed out by a parent/carer.

We have been so impressed with Readeville’s learning and community spirit this year and we are really looking forward to these end-of-year celebrations.

Finally, please send along a sturdy plastic bag next week so that your child can use it to carry home their school books from this year.

Thanks and regards,

Rachel and Michelle

Concert Update

Dear Readers,

Just a note to let you know that at this stage our school concert is still scheduled to go ahead this evening. The forecast is for the rain to clear. We will post an update to this blog if these plans change.

Also, due to the rain that we have had so far today, we would greatly appreciate donations of mats/rugs/tarpaulins for the children to sit on tonight if possible please.

Thanks for your help!

School Concert, Class Party and the Movies

Dear Readers,

Here are some reminders about the busy week ahead:

  1. School Concert: We ask that children come to their class in costume at 6:15 this Thursday night. We need to be ready backstage by 6:25, because we are the second act to perform. If you really can’t find a bow-tie, please let your child’s teacher know BY WEDNESDAY, because we do have a handful of spare ties (the cost is $2 each). After the concert, children need to be signed out by a parent/carer. Children will wait with their teacher near the audio equipment until they’re collected. Please note, children are expected to stay for the entire concert, so you may want to send along a jumper for them to wear after they come off stage. Children are also welcome to bring a blanket to sit on during the show.
  2. Class Party: A reminder that the Readeville class party will be held from 12:00-1:00 on Monday, December 11 (week nine). Please note, children will not need to bring lunch for the day. We have asked that girls bring a SMALL PLATE of something sweet to share and that boys bring a SMALL PLATE of something savoury to share. Donations of paper plates and serviettes will be gratefully received. Please let your child’s classroom teacher know if you are able to help out on the day.
  3. Cinema Excursion: A friendly reminder that all payments and consent forms for our excursion to see Paddington 2 on Monday, December 11 were due today. Please return consent forms and payment ASAP if you have not done so already. Thank you to parents who offered to be volunteers on the night. Our two volunteers for Room 24 are Hayley (Alannah’s mum) and Christine (Cody’s mum). Please note, it will not be possible for parents to come to the movies ‘just in case’ their child becomes anxious or upset. If children do become particularly distressed, teachers will contact parents to come to collect them. We thank you for your understanding and support.

As always, please see us if you have any queries.

Kind regards,

Rachel and Michelle

Our New Home

Dear Readers,

Well done to the citizens of Readeville for the smooth move into their new home. The children have done a fantastic job of settling into the Doolette building. Thank you for your support and understanding, too, during the building renovations.

The children are still working away, even though the end of the year is creeping up. You may want to ask your child about Pigeon Impossible, one of the ‘quick writes’ that we have been doing to help practise generating ideas. Here is a link to the video that we watched for our inspiration:

In maths, we have been exploring how addition and subtraction ‘undo’ each other. And in health we have been continuing our work on safe and unsafe secrets.

Please check your child’s reading folder for the notes below regarding end of year celebrations.

See you next week!

Rachel and Michelle

On The Move

Dear Readers,

There has been a lot of activity in Readeville during the past few days as we prepare to move over to the Doolette building as part of major renovations to the Reade building. Here is some important information about the move:

  1. Rooms 22, 23 and 24 will be taught in the Doolette building from Monday (November 20) until the end of the year. Here are two letters about the move that have come home this week. Please note the information in the second letter about where children will line up with their classes in the Doolette building:

Our teaching programs will continue as normal (including usual days and times for PE, ART etc) once we are in the Doolette building. The children are excited about the move and have done a fabulous job of helping to pack things up.

There is also essential information in one of the letters about a child in the Doolette building with a severe egg allergy. This allergy is potentially life-threatening, so it is vital that children from Reade do not bring food with egg in it to school when they are in the Doolette building. If you are unsure about suitable food, please talk to us.

  2. If you haven’t seen it, here is a note about our  end-of-year concert on Thursday 7th December. We have also attached the lyrics to Let Me Entertain You, FYI.
  3. Please note, our regular learning programs will continue when we move to the Doolette building. We are aiming to finish the year with as little disruption as possible.
  4. School readers: All readers need to be returned by the end of week seven (Friday, December 1) at the latest please. We will be looking for parent helpers during week eight to help us sort through our reader collection for the end of the year and ready for next year. We will continue reading in class and we encourage you to also access readers for your child via the Oxford Owl website (log-in cards were sent home recently). These readers are a brilliant resource. Library books are also due back by the end of week seven at the latest. We will still be borrowing from the library in week six.
  5. Movie night – save the date: We are planning a movie night as an end-of-year celebration for Readeville on Monday, December 11 (week nine). Watch this space for more information.

Thank you for your support during our move and for all that you do to help the citizens of Readeville!

Kind regards,

Rachel and Michelle

Animal Magic

Dear Readers,

We had a whole lot of fun and experienced really valuable learning opportunities at our zoo excursion this week. The children did a fabulous job of observing and researching animals ‘in the field’. An elephant-sized thank you to the parent volunteers who gave their time and support on the day.

Here are some photo highlights…

Here is our other news from Room 24 in Readeville:

  1. Oxford words: Today your child took home his/her latest assessment for the spelling of the Oxford words. The words in grey are the words children know. The words highlighted in yellow are the words they have learnt to spell since the last Oxford spelling assessment. So, please help your child practise the words in black type – these are the words they are still learning to spell.
  2. Reading: We have also sent home the log-on cards for the Oxford Owl e-books that we mentioned in an earlier post, so your child can read these at home, too.
  3. In maths, we have been closely investigating the minute hand and how it helps us to tell the time. This has really helped many of the children to see that at 10 past the hour, the minute hand is not on the 10! We have also been investigating the language and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Speaking of shapes, we have attached a shape investigation that really stretched many of our learners. It was a good opportunity to discuss what to do when we feel ‘stuck’ in maths (e.g share ideas, draw pictures, work backwards). Room 24 discussed the quote we’ve attached, too, which was particularly relevant to this maths challenge.

4. Writing: We have been reading information texts to help us further explore their features (e.g headings, sub-headings, fact boxes, photos and diagrams). Our zoo visit was a great opportunity for the children to collect their own factual details.

5. Science: We were lucky enough to have Nicolas’s mum, Graziela, who is a marine geologist, visit the class to talk about volcanoes. The children were fascinated to see footage of volcanoes and to examine different rock samples. Thanks, Graziela!

6. Pupil-free day: Don’t forget, next Friday (November 3) is a pupil-free day.

7. Term overview: Attached is a learning overview for term four.

We hope you enjoy the photos below, too.

See you next week!

Term Four Sharing

Dear Readers,

Today we sent home information about sharing this term. Please look out for it in your child’s blue reading folder. Please note the schedule for talks (they start next week), which looks like this:
